In recent months we’ve listed 26 new walks in our Find a Place to Walk directory.
Last week we also listed 110 new historical walks, a great way to explore some of the rich history in our suburbs and country towns.
Over the last eighteen months the directory has expanded to over 300 walks and trails around the state, so there are plenty of places to explore for walking.

Waitpinga Cliffs to Kings Beach, Heysen Trail
11.5km, 4-6 hours one way
A spectacular 11.5km trail from Waitpinga Campground, along the Waitpinga Cliffs. Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea-eagles, one of a just a few breeding pairs of sea-eagles on the mainland inhabit the cliffs here.
Tatendi Hike, Onkaparinga Gorge (3 Walk Options)
6km, 2.5 – 4 hours
A difficult but rewarding hike, descending steeply into Onkaparinga Gorge. Moderate and easy hike choices are also detailed on the map. The Onkaparinga River is lined with reed and old gum trees, and has many permanent large water holes.
Randell Park Reserve
3.6km, 60 – 90 mins
Randell Park Reserve is a small reserve which offers a 3.6km loop hike. From mid 2016 the trails in the park are being upgraded, with improved trails and better signage.
Jenkins Scrub Walking Trail
1.5km, 30-60 mins
Wander along this circuit trail, taking in part of the Heysen Trail, through some of the native scrub below Little Mount Crawford. During September and October experience plenty of wildflowers along the trail.
Mount Pleasant Summit Trail
11.5km, 2 – 4.5 hours depending on route
Choose between three circuits, or combine into larger circuit hikes. These walks wander through Mt Crawford Forest. Whilst most of the forest comprises of pine plantation, there is also some delightful native scrub areas.
Noarlunga Downs Wetland Trail, Onkaparinga River
0.6km, 30 mins return, 0.6km one way, 1.2km return
The trail follows the edge of what is now a predator-free sanctuary. The trail features art by contemporary Aboriginal artist Paul Herzich.
Harbourmasters Walking Trail, Port Elliot
1.9km, 30 – 60mins
A 1.9km circuit hike between Horseshoe Bay, across the headland to Knights Beach. The trail begins at the ruins of the Harbour Master’s Cottage opposite the YHA on the Strand. The trail follows a cobblestone path around the headland of Freemans Knob past Ladys Beach, Rocky Bay and Green Bay before reaching Knights Beach. The trail returns along the Esplanade and the Centenary Stairs and past Freemans Lookout.
Pingle Farm Trail via estuary, Onkaparinga River Recreation Park
3.3km, 90 mins
Walk along the estuary before returning via the ruins of the former Pingle Farm farmhouse and sheds.
Old Noarlunga Hike, Onkaparinga River National Park
3.5km, 2 hours
Experience a hike along the Onkaparinga River, starting from the swinging bridge. The walk takes in part of the Gorge Trek, but this walk only includes one rock scramble but does include some narrow walking trail. The trail climbs the hill following the pipeline, before descending steeply back to the swinging bridge.
Wallowa Hike loop, Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park
7.6km, 2-3 hours
The Wallowa Hike explores Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, following part of the Heysen Trail, and includes some of the park’s interesting rock features.
Stenhouse Bay Lookout Trail
2.2km, 1 hour return
A short walk around the headland above Stenhouse Bay. The trail includes seven viewing points with coastal views and interpretive signage showing glimpses into the mining history and vegetation of the area.
Lizard Rock Nature Walk, Para Wirra
1.5km, 1-2 hours
Experience an easy walk to the Lizard Rocks, a collection of large boulders that provide views into the valley of Wild Dog Creek.
Lady Pearce Hike, Para Wirra
5km, 2-3 hours
This 5.0km circuit hike explores the former mine workings of Victoria Hill, a scene of much activity in the late 1860s, and descends into the South Para River. The lower sections of the trail, in the south near the South Para River, are particularly rewarding.
Phoenix Hike, Para Wirra
4.2km, 2-3 hours
4.2km circuit hike explores the former mine workings. Interpretive signs, mine shafts, mine workings and tramway tunnels.
Quarry Hike, Para Wirra
9.4km, 4.7km one way, 9.4km return, 2 hours one way, 4 hours return
A hike exploring some of the northern section of the park, from Gate 14 on to The Knob Lookout and picnic area. The trail is along fire track, and includes a rewarding walk through Wild Dog Creek.
Victoria Hill Walk, Para Wirra
1.4km, 45 mins
1.4km circuit explores the former mine workings of Victoria Hill. Interpretive signs provide information about mine shafts, mine workings & the former town that was once here.
Wirra Loop Hike, Para Wirra
5km, 2-3 hours
An easy walk that meanders through the open scrub of the park. The walk is generally flat and along fire track.
Devils Nose Hike via Lizard Rock and Hissey Trails, Para Wirra
8.8km, 4-5 hours
Descend into Wild Dog Creek at the northern end of this hike, and glimpse views of Devils Nose from below as you gradually countour around on the ascent to the lookout. The Hissey Trail walks around the main Lake.
Hissey Loop Walk, Para Wirra
2.4km, 1 hour loop
Walk around the main Lake and along the shaded Wild Dog Creek. The walk is designed for prams and those with mobility issues* (please note there are two flights of 13 steps.)
Heysen Trail South Coast
73km, 3-5 days
A 4-5 day highlight section of the Heysen Trail along the south coast is spectacular, with good campsites along the way for multi-day hikers.
Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park (Filsell Hill)
4.7km, 2-3 hours
A 4.7km loop hike through the stringybark forest of the Filsell Hill section of Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park. Follow the bushwalking map with the directions.
Wottons Scrub (Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park)
3.6km, 2-3 hours
A 3.6km loop hike through the stringybark forest of the Wottons Scrub section of Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park. Follow the bushwalking map with the directions.
Bashams Beach Regional Park walking trails
5.7km, 2 hours
A 5.7km circuit walk in Basham’s Beach Regional Park, following walking trails and the shared-use Encounter Bikeway.
Ridgeway Hill Walking Trail, Newland Head
7.5km, 2-3 hours
Enjoy a loop hike through the quieter areas of the park. The trail follows fire tracks and walking trails. Keep an eye out for echidnas and kangaroos.
Coastal Cliffs Walking Trail, Newland Head
8.6km, 2-3 hours
Enjoy a walk from Waitpinga Campground out to the cliffs of Waitpinga. An easily followed loop hike along some of the Heysen Trail, before returning inland via a fire track.
Stringybark Hike, Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park
2.7km, 1 hour
The Stringybark Hike is a short loop of the eastern part of Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park. The trail wanders through the flora and fauna, including grassy open areas and stringybark trees.
