Submission on the Rundle Street Movement Study

Walking SA commends the Department for Infrastructure and Transport for placing emphasis on movement data and user needs in shaping improvements for Rundle Street, Kent Town. We urge that this study results in outcomes that prioritise pedestrian safety and comfort, creates an inclusive and attractive public realm, and supports sustainable and healthy transport choices for residents, workers, students and visitors alike.

As the proposed interventions are presented at a high level, our response focuses on overarching principles and pedestrian-focused priorities:

  1. Support for Pedestrian Priority and Safety Improvements
    • Prioritise safe, legible and frequent crossing opportunities aligned with actual pedestrian desire lines.
    • Reduce vehicle speeds to improve safety and comfort for walkers of all ages and abilities.
    • Minimise the severance effects created by high traffic volumes, making the street feel more human-scaled and welcoming.
    • Improve accessibility for people with disability, older adults, children, and those using mobility aids or prams.
  2. Specific Pedestrian-Focused Recommendations
  3. Supporting Active Transport and Integration
  4. Parking and Movement Trade-offs
