About the Walking Trail
The shared-use path is for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Although frequented by cyclists, the trail is great for walking short sections, or to take the kids on their bikes and walk beside them.
The trail is 21.7km long, and starts just north of Oakbank, passing through Woodside, on to Mt Torrens and in 2025 extended on to Birdwood.
This path is all bitumised and is used by walkers, runners and riders (both young and old). The path is wide and clear and well used.
The route from Oakbank to Mount Torrens is a long but very gentle climb. The highest point of the trail is just south of Mount Torrens, and from there the trail is a gentle descent into Birdwood – with the last kilometre into Birdwood being a gentle climb.
Walkers will enjoy a country walk within the beautiful Adelaide Hills, without having to go up and down steep hills! The rises and descents are very gentle/gradual.
The path is suitable for walkers and riders of all levels with plenty of families enjoying the path, along with people walking their dogs.
The path does have exposed sections but much of it is shaded by gums.
Whether on wheels or on foot, don’t forget to keep left when travelling along the pathway. If you hear a bell, someone is trying to pass you, so move to the left and keep children and dogs close by.
When using prams and wheelchairs, there are some short steeper sections to get on and off bridges in the Mt Torrens to Birdwood extension.
An article on playandgo.com.au details some of the best shorter sections to walk or ride with kids.
