About the Walking Trail
The Ocean Beach Hike provides a safe and direct link for walkers from the 42 Mile Campground to the ocean beach.
The short hike to the ocean takes visitors across coastal sand dunes providing vast views of the Coorong and Southern Ocean.
The hike begins from the picnic area and toilets at the 42 Mile Campground, the trailhead is close to the picnic shelter. Take the trail towards the ocean, as the trail to the right and north is the 25km Nukan Kungun Hike trail. After just 100 metres towards the ocean, the trail briefly meets the 4WD track at the tyre inflation staging point, the trail continues through the dunes. Stay on the dedicated hiking trail to avoid 4WD vehicles on the parallel (but distant) 4WD track. Use caution when exiting the trail at the ocean as there may be 4WD traffic along the beach and close to the dune edge.
Towards the ocean the trail traverses more open sand dunes, with plants specialised to the salty, windy environment.
The Ocean Beach is popular for 4WDing, surf fishing and camping, but is not suitable for swimming as the waves are rough and there are deep water gutters with strong rips.
The Friends of the Coorong provide detailed information about the walk.
