The Port Pirie Railway Station (Ellen Street) was built in a striking Victorian Pavilion style in 1902. The first railway station opened on this site, here in the main street, in 1875 when a railway line was built from Port Pirie to Gladstone. In 1888 that railway line was extended to the SA/NSW border Cockburn (and on to Broken Hill.) The original building was replaced in 1902 with this Victorian Pavilion style. In 1937 the railway line from Adelaide reach Port Pirie, but ended at railway station in nearby Solomontown. The station Ellen Street was closed in 1967 when the railway was finally removed from the main street, with a new railway station on Mary Elie Street replaced both previous railwys stations.
