Watervale to Mount Horrocks Short Walk

About the Walking Trail

Immerse yourself in the scenic Watervale region, well known for its world-class Riesling. Walk through the historic township of Watervale into classic Clare Valley countryside of vineyards, cellar doors and rolling hills as you make your way to the Mount Horrocks lookout to enjoy the spectacular 360-degree views; some of the best in the region. This walk predominantly follows the Lavender Federation Trail and includes back roads which take you onto private property with a climb up to Mt Horrocks lookout. Unfortunately, you don’t climb Mount Horrocks itself but the view is no less spectacular from the top.

This short walk follows some of the 325km Lavender Federation Trail.

A section of the Short Walk (Mount Horrocks Lookout) is located on private property. This section is closed during the bushfire season. The Short Walk that follows Council roads is accessible all year round.

The first 2.9km of this walk is along country roads so be cautious of vehicle traffic. After that the trail follows a quiet country laneway before following a fenceline across croplands.

On your return stop by the beautifully renovated Watervale Hotel for an epicurean experience or a bite to eat and coffee at the Watervale General Store.

The short walk is 11.5km return.

Start the short walk in Watervale at the Riesling Trail, where it meets Sollys Hill Road.
You could also start the walk from the main street, near the Watervale Hotel.
You could shorten the walk by driving to the end of the road section, and parking and walking from there. This would make the walk a 5.2km return walk. The road section ends on the corner of Mt Horrocks Rd and Springvale Rd, before following a driveway towards Mt Horrocks.
