About the Walking Trail
Enjoy a walk up Willunga Hill Trail from the John Yeates memorial lookout. The walk follows a narrow corridor between Old Willunga Hill Road and the Victor Harbor Road up Willunga Hill, although with the dense trees you wouldn’t often nice that. Thanks to the work of Trees for Life, Department of Planning, Transport & Infrastructure (DPTI) and the City of Onkaparinga the area has protected 85 indigenous plant species. The corridor includes a Eucalyptus fasciculosa (Pink gum) population which is rated rare in South Australia.
Kangaroos and feral goats can often be spotted.
You can start the walk from the carpark at John Yeates memorial lookout (access from the main Victor Harbor Road heading uphill).
You can also start the walk from the top, you can park in the open gravel area at the intersection of Brookman Road and Old Willunga Hill Road, and then find the start of the trail on the opposite side of Brookman Road.
The trail is 1.3km one-way, or 2.6km return.
Unfortunately the trail is not always well marked or clear, but it is still easy enough to follow – there are a couple of fire track intersections near the top that have no markers to indicate which way to go, but the wrong tracks are dead ends. At some points the trail takes you along narrow ledges in close proximity to Old Willunga Hill Road so perhaps avoid if you are not sure-footed.
